Mentioned on Ep 099: 5 Simple steps to non-toxic living and detoxing your life and home. How Toxins affect our well-being and burnout!
Welcome back to The Burnout Doctor Podcast, I’m your host Dr. Jessica Louie. On episode 99, we are talking about 5 steps to a non-toxic life on our journey to an eco-friendly simplified lifestyle.
Today’s episode is 5 simple steps to a non-toxic life. We can all make small changes that have significant results. For me, this came after I reset burnout and simplified my physical space. It was too overwhelming to tackle off of this at once!
Step 1: Detox the Foods you Eat
For me that means intuitive eating and not a restrictive process. This meant letting go of some of the processed foods that were not serving me and transitioning to organic produce that was helpful in my life. For those of you who are thinking – I can’t afford organic foods or that’s not necessary, please go back to our last episode on the pesticide usage in the United States. I personally did NOT grow up eating organic foods. I thought it was a fad that was not necessary. Then I educated myself on toxins and pesticide use and I’ve slowly converted over fruits and veggies. I’m still working on our meats/proteins as we speak. Now, if you say you can’t afford something, I apply the same concept as when we say I don’t have time. Let’s shift this language to: it’s not a priority in my life right now. I also challenge you to think about where you’re money is going – to a $1000 phone, a $100 a month cable bill, a $100 makeup bill, etc. I say this not to make anyone feel guilty. I say this because I used to be in this position where I prioritized other things and did not take a hard look at my finances. Since going debt-free from $300,000 with my fiancé (medical/pharmacy student loans) in less than 7 years (during residency/fellowship training), I am intentional where we prioritize our financial well-being and health.
Step 2: Non-toxic Cleaners
Who dislikes the smell of cleaners in our bathrooms, kitchen or toilets? I know I used to gag at the smell when my mom deep cleaned those areas growing up. We used all the typical household cleaners that have LOT of ingredients that are not serving our bodies and well-being. I switched to non-toxic cleaners that did not have poison-control written all over them and it simplified my life.
Step 3: Ditch the Personal Care Items
Ok, we all have them. Items we’ve used for YEARS and could not fathom letting go of. For me that included hair care products I’ve used 25+ years, skincare 5+ years, deodorant and lotion brands. How well do you know the ingredients in these? The aluminum in our deodorant. Start small. Start with one cabinet at a time.
Step 4: Reduce plastic use
Reminder that I did not say eliminate plastic use. That’s an unrealistic expectation in our lives. We can reduce our exposure to plastic. For example, growing up we microwaved a lot of food from leftovers in plastic containers. Was that the best idea? Probably not but we didn’t know any better. Now, investing in glassware that will last for years is a good switch. Plus, it may save the environment. Think plastic straws and plastic utensils that we can swap to reusable items that do not end up in landfills each day.
Step 5: Drink filtered water
Drink filtered water in a reusable glass or stainless steel container. No more plastic water bottles. When we moved in 2020, we set-up our water filter (yes 5 hours later) and although an inconvenience for one morning, it was so worth it. Now, I’m sure many of you will ask what type of water filter to buy. It depends on your local water sources and what needs to be filtered. Do your research, switch and enjoy clean water. It’s simple.
Until next time, spark joy my friends!
