Today’s topic is one I’m often asked about when talking about burnout and well-being in my keynote speaking events. I had 10 keynote speaking events the last two months.
Let’s get on the same page and talk about what is resilience?
What is resilience? Definition of Resilience:
- One’s ability to maintain or regain mental health after experiencing adversity.
- “Bounce back” from stressful and emotional experiences
- By definition, inherent attribute of grit
What is Grit?
- Passion and perseverance towards a long-term goal despite being confronted by significant obstacles or distractions
- Ability to delay gratification while working on a task
- Those who possess grit are able to self-regulate and postpone their need for positive reinforcement while working diligently on a task.
- Grit is “sticktoitiveness;” a diligent spirit; the nagging conviction that keeps you pressing on when it’d be easier to give up
Example of resilience:
- Not getting into graduate school on the first try
- Not passing pharmacy or medical board exams on the first try
- Not getting promoted on the first try
5 Ways to Build Resilience:
- Make Connections – deep, meaningful connections with family and friends
- Move towards your Goals – set 90-day goals and take baby steps each day, each week and each month to move towards them
- Invest in yourself – focus on your own personal learning and spirituality in your life check-ins
- Focus on what you can control – you can’t change that stressful events occur but you can change how you interpret and respond to these events
- Take Care of Physical, Emotional and Mental Health – focus on one area at a time including sleep, laughter, mindfulness, moving your body, nutrition, etc.
