Welcome back to The Burnout Doctor Podcast, I’m your host Dr. Jessica Louie. Common Mistakes when Simplifying or using the KonMari Method Thank you for your feedback on our last episode about WHAT to do when we feel like quitting our simplifying journeys or feel like quitting the KonMari Method. I heard so many of you resonate with one of the four reasons we feel stuck and ready to quit and how to move past it. It was also wonderful to meet you virtually during our first LIVE Simplifying Session last weekend. Remember, we are holding these once a month at a fraction of what 1-on-1 coaching costs! Reserve you spot for our next one in February. We all write our own stories in our lives and homes. Let’s all bring joy into home and joy into work.

As a Master-Level Certified KonMari Consultant, I understand the feeling that you may be making mistakes during your own journey. Let’s address 3 of these common mistakes today.

ONE: The #1 Mistake I see when simplifying and using the KonMari Method is believing that your home will look perfect during the process. This is an unrealistic expectation. First of all, it’s SO important we acknowledge that our homes often GET WORSE before they get better.

This is a reminder that all the items we have hidden behind cabinets, in closets and in drawers will now be pulled out so we can see them, sorted, picked up to see if it sparks joy and then placed back in a permanent location. When we see all of our items on a table or on the floor as we sort through what is there, it’s overwhelming. It’s cluttered. It looks MUCH worse than when it was hidden away. BUT it’s a necessary step to get to our end goal…our ideal lifestyle.

Take for example, child discipline or sleep training

TWO: The second mistake I see when simplifying and using the KonMari Method is believing that our homes will look Pinterest-worthy at the end. Believing that our homes will look like the magazine photos or the Netflix shows we watch. Let’s have a realistic expectation. Our homes will look the way we want them to look. The way many homes look Pinterest-worthy is by spending thousands of dollars on home décor or interior designers. The simplifying journey and KonMari Method address physical clutter – they are not addressing home décor. That comes AFTER we simplify and declutter. I will tell you that I have NEVER been in a client’s home that is Pinterest-worthy at the end. Because that is not the goal of simplifying. It can be a goal later on, but many times my clients realize that that is an unrealistic expectation and honestly, WASTE OF MONEY to try to achieve and it does NOT align with their own values of purchasing STUFF again to fill their homes. And then fill their time taking care of, maintaining and cleaning that STUFF.

THREE: The third mistake I see when simplifying and using the KonMari Method is focusing on other people’s clutter or your family participating in the process. We cannot control others. We only control ourselves, our feelings and how we react to situations. When your partner or family does not share your same enthusiasm for simplifying, focus on what you can control and find a different outlet to discuss your simplifying journey. This could be a coach, accountability partner, or friend. We do not push others or nag others to start along this same journey. Many times, leading by example will inspire those around us. I’ve lost track of the number of times a family member has been inspired by the KonMari Method while I’m working one-on-one with a client and done his or her own work. Joy is contagious. Live yours and others will be inspired to choose joy as well!
