Welcome back to The Burnout Doctor Podcast, I’m your host Dr. Jessica Louie. Today, we are talking about how to know when you have burnout and the early warning signs. Early Warnings Signs of Burnout:
- Exhaustion – physical, emotional, mental and spiritual
- Fatigue: Do you feel you’re never fully rested? And no nap or coffee will help this fatigue?
- Insomnia: Do you have physical symptoms right now? Frequent headaches, back pain or GI discomfort?
- Forgetfulness: Do you have trouble processing information and feel there is too-much in your brain to remember? Level of brain fog or forgetfulness?
- Increased frequency of illness: Do you have more frequent illnesses or sicknesses?
- Cynicism – depersonalization – negative viewpoint
- Resentment or Unfairness: Did you have a complaint or feedback that was ignored but a colleague was heard? feeling of anger or displeasure coming from a belief that you have been wronged by others or betrayed
- Isolation: Do you feel like you’re alone in this? Are you feeling disconnected from your patients or co-workers? Turn away invites to social gatherings or to eat meals together?
- Loss of Enjoyment: Do you find joy in your work or do you go home feeling numb sometimes?
- Unethical – Conflict between your personal values and the organization’s values or actions? Does an organization publicly promote one mission statement but privately engages in unethical practices?
- Decreased self-efficacy – low sense of personal accomplishment
- Hopelessness: Do you feel your work is making a real difference in the world?
