Welcome back to The Burnout Doctor Podcast, I’m your host Dr. Jessica Louie. We are talking about how to deal with failure. Thank you for sharing your action steps from our last episode on how to bring joy into each day and welcome to the many new students in our Joy at Work course. Many of you are taking action by using our complimentary Burnout Starter Kit – don’t forget to download yours today! We all write our own stories in our lives and homes. Let’s all bring joy into home and joy into work.

This is a commonly requested topic today. I know many students who may also be listening who are taking their pharmacy national or state board exams right now or applying to jobs and have this fear of failing. Let’s talk about how to deal with the fear or the reality of failure.

When we are working on personal and professional growth, often times, we are our own worst enemy. We hold ourselves back. Second guess ourselves. And self-sabotage. Let’s be intentional in our growth and allow ourselves to thrive in any environment we face.

Here is one activity to address mindsets head-on and reframe them if needed.

You can also go back to our Impostor Syndrome episode 118 on the podcast to listen to that as well.

What-If Protocol

Think about an area where you are stuck. You have fear about it. Your brain is trying to protect you. Ask yourself questions to think about all the possibilities that could happen. Then at the end, we’ll see if we can survive these possibilities.

The What-If protocol is very similar to asking yourself WHY you are doing something or want to do something – this is one of the first steps in my philosophy – aka why I call my process The Burnout Doctor Method – and why setting your ideal lifestyle and WHY you want to declutter is a first step in the KonMari Method

Let’s walk through the What-If Protocol

What is it you are afraid of? – failing my exam, not getting the job

Ok, what if that happened? – I would need to retake the exam, I would need to find a different job opportunity

Ok, now what are you worried could happen next? – Someone could find out I failed the exam or I would be letting down my mentor who helped me get the job interview

If that happened, what would you do? – I could find a new study strategy or help through a new study resource, I could find a job that is a better fit for my skills

Ok, now what else could happen that concerns you? Disappointing my family and friends

If that happened, how would you handle it? Reminding myself that failing is a learning experience and that it DOES NOT define me and who I am as a person. It’s simply a moment in time

You keep going until you get to the end of all your fears and worries.

When you get to the end, ask, could I survive that?

I KNOW you can do this! Don’t be afraid to ask for help if you’ve experience failure and need additional guidance from a mentor or a coach like myself.

Have you ever experienced failure or have a fear of failing at something? Let’s talk about how to overcome this fear or reality of failing today. How to deal with failure and use the what-if protocol
