How do I cultivate quality relationships and community around me? I feel a lack in my life and connection is so important for my well-being. Let’s talk about this today!

Welcome back to The Burnout Doctor Podcast, I’m your host Dr. Jessica Louie. We are talking about how to cultivate community. Thank you for sharing your action steps from our last episode on how to set healthy boundaries. Many of you are taking action by using our complimentary Burnout Starter Kit – don’t forget to download yours today! We all write our own stories in our lives and homes. Let’s all bring joy into home and joy into work.

Let me let you into a little secret. I used to be terrible at cultivating relationships and community. I stressed over it and worried about it. Over the years, I’ve learned how to effectively cultivate community through in-person and virtual platforms. I’m sharing some advice on what I learned along the way.

Who has obsessed over the number of friends you have on a social media platform or the number of likes on a post? I know I have in the past. When Facebook first arrived in the early 2000s, that was a metric of popularity. But was it really worth the hype?

NO!

First, practice QUALITY over quantity. I say this all the time – not only about relationships but also with physical items and clutter in your life! When we practice quality – we cultivate the best relationships for long-term growth. This practice helps protect our emotional well-being as we let go of toxic relationships, relationships that are no longer serving us and keeping what is bringing JOY into our lives.

Don’t believe me? Let’s look into the future. When you are at the end of your life and you look around into the eyes of the people surrounding you on your death bed, who will you see? It’s interesting to remember that ~8 people can fit around your bed. Who do you want to see in that moment in the future?

How do I approach a new connection to create quality together?

Think about your core values and WHY statement we’ve talked about on the podcast before and included in our Joy at Work course. List out what these are. You can even take it a step further and write down your Community Standards. What values do you want in the people you interact with regularly? Do you want them to be positive? To be givers? To be big thinkers? Do you want to let go of any gossip? Write your own Community Standards right now!

Next, think about how you are approaching a new connection. Are you willing and open to share your true feelings, learn from each other and move forward when setbacks occur? Are you willing to be there during tough times?

How to Build a High-Quality Connection and Community

  • To build a high-quality connection
    • First, be present. State true feelings
    • Second, help others do their best work.
    • Third, be open and trust others. Make yourself vulnerable- let people know of mistakes and shortcomings, approachable. Stop pretending you’re perfect, Authentically delegate
    • Fourth, encourage play – deepens thinking and ignites creativity

Stand confidently in who you are (and allow others to be who they are)

We can’t control others; we can only control ourselves. What others do and say has everything to do with them – and nothing to do with us. We can let it roll off; we can choose what we want to make it mean.

“No one can make you feel inferior without your consent” -Eleanor Roosevelt
