Mentioned on Ep 012: What is the KonMari Method by Certified KonMari Consultant and Coach!
Watch on YouTube!
Welcome back to The Burnout Doctor Podcast with your host, Dr. Jessica Louie. Today on episode 12, we are discussing what is the KonMari Method. I’m a Master-Level Certified KonMari Consultant and the only healthcare professional certified in this simplifying technique.
Overview: What is the KonMari Method?
The KonMari Method is about choosing joy and surrounding yourself with items that speak to your heart. It’s truly a life-changing process – where when you follow the method – you’ll simplify and tidy up your home once and for all and you’ll never do it again.
Going back in time, the KonMari Method was founded by Marie Kondo in Japan. After creating the method, she published a couple books including the Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up and Spark Joy. You may also recognize the method from the Netflix show (airing January 2019) Tidying Up with Marie Kondo. I first founded about the KonMari Method at the end of 2015, early 2016 and it changed my life!
It not only decluttered my physical space, but it helped me to declutter my mental/emotional/spiritual space. It truly can be applied to all aspects of your life. Once we address what is closest to us, which I believe is our homes, then we can intentionally apply the philosophy to all other aspects of our lives – such as well-being, finances, relationships, community.
Now, I’m a Certified KonMari Consultant and Coach (there are only 140 US certified KonMari Consultants and 270 worldwide)
Now I’m working with clients to help people people find confidence to live intentionally so we all create meaningful contributions to the world.
For my practices, I coach women, pharmacists and healthcare professionals through the process with a central theme around the KonMari MethodTM. Here is a brief overview of the philosophy.
The KonMari Method and Clarify Simplify Align’s philosophy is grounded in clarity, simplicity and alignment. These principles foster growth in gratitude, respect, and joy. Throughout this journey, you’ll curate a life that YOU love. You’ll be able to lead with confidence, live intentionally, mindfully, and focus on what matters most to you.
How is it this method and Clarify Simplify Align’s philosophy different than other organizing techniques?
Start with your Vision
We set up your ideal lifestyle and visualize your end goals to ensure you stay on your own unique path. This helps you build confidence in your decision-making skills throughout the journey
Focus on Keeping items that Speak to our Hearts (aka “spark joy”)
We focus on what we will keep, not how much we will discard. Those items that no longer speak to our hearts (spark joy!), we thank them (give gratitude) and let them go.
Lasting Change
We take a Category-by-category approach instead of room-by-room or little-by-little approach which doom you to pick away at clutter forever. When you properly simplify and organize your home once, you’ll never go through it again – because it effectively shifts habits and mindsets
Simplify your Home by Tidying by Category not by Location:
Start with the easier categories first – clothing – because it touches our skin and is closest to our heart: Clothing, Books, Paper, Komono (miscellaneous), and Sentimental Items.
1. Gather all items in that category or sub-category in one location
2. Pick up each item and Ask yourself, does it spark joy?
3. If yes, keep it with confidence, honor it and store it.
If no, thank it for what it taught you, let it go with gratitude and intention – recycle, repurpose, donate, discard, sell
Keep going through this in order until we reach the end.
Reminder: we did not accumulate clutter and items overnight. It took years to decades to bring these items into our homes.
In addition, our physical spaces may get worse before they get better. Just like injuries, sometimes they look or feel worse (like that bruise or sore muscle) before we’re able to heal and recover from it.
Same with decluttering, we have to pull everything out – out of that nook, hidden drawer, back closet – sort it and then make a decision on each item. This is a process just like resetting burnout is a process.
The KonMari Method and Clarify Simplify Align’s techniques are not a quick fix or “put a band-aid” on it process. Commit yourself to this journey and you’ll find the upcoming weeks-months well worth the investment.
Living into your 80,90, 100s – if commit 3,6,12 months to this, you’ll have years to enjoy it.
This once-in-a-lifetime process will forever change your life.
It will change habits. How you bring physical items into your life – whether that be from shopping for new items, buying used items, or receiving gifts.
You’ve heard my burnout story and how the decluttering and simplifying my life using principles from the KonMari Method saved me from burnout.
My journey with the KonMari Method lasted a couple of months. And once I addressed physical clutter, as you know, I was able to address mental and emotional clutter. Completely changing buying habits – shifted from buying clothing to cope with stress to learning how to address stress head on and reset it.
Helped me address financial well-being and become clear on what was most important – experiences and memories over things – stopped comparing myself to societal norms (owning big houses, designer purses, new clothing trends) and instead on me, the legacy I wanted to leave – this is also lead to capsule wardrobes – another tool I use with clients to become intentional.
Now it’s your turn. Tell me how decluttering and simplifying will help your life.
Today we went over what the KonMari Method is and how it can help you in your life decrease stress, overwhelm and burnout.
