Pharmacist burnout coaching year in review 2019 and gratitude for 2020 goal setting. Spark Joy in Healthcare by Dr. Jessica Louie, Clarify Simplify Align Burnout Doctor Podcast

Happy New Year everyone! Today, I’m taking a moment to look back on 2020 and start 2021 with gratitude.

First, I thank each and every one of you for your support and encouragement. Sharing a piece of my passion on this platform, blog and podcast is truly an honor.

I’m not one to write down New Year’s Resolutions each January. Instead, I like to plan out goals for my personal and professional lives – this step can happen ANYTIME of the year, month or the week – there is no waiting until January 1st to start something in your life! Join me in setting goals – listen to episode 101 and episode 7 on CURATE your goals and download the podcast workbook today!

A Recap of 2020

Before I start on this recap for the fourth year in a row, I want to take a moment to acknowledge that 2020 was challenging. It did NOT go as planned. The most difficult part was losing my grandfather to metastatic prostate cancer in March 2020. The next most difficult parts were seeing my family locally less often, not being able to hug them, not being able to travel to family (I am intentionally choosing not to get on an airplane until I’m vaccinated), and seeing burnout rise within our healthcare profession at an alarming rate.

My grandfather and I two months before his death. His Chinese culture has inspired so much in my life and I’m thankful I saw him in early 2020.

Along the way, I learned a lot. I stepped back a lot to reflect. And I’m grateful for 2020. I’m grateful for my personal health, my family’s health and for the joys that we encountered this year. All of our years look different. Please do not compare what I share in this yearly reflection as a measure of success or as a way to compare yourself to me. We all write our unique stories.

My Word for 2020 was THRIVE. See my word for 2021 below.

3 Biggest Wins:

  • Joy at Work course was launched and the complimentary workshop is available here.
  • The Burnout Doctor Podcast reached 100 episodes and featured 27 pharmacist during October to celebrate Pharmacist Month Stories
  • I gave back during March – May 2020 to frontline pharmacists and healthcare professionals with our Spark Joy in Healthcare care packages. See recap here.

Most Rewarding:

  • Seeing client transformation through burnout coaching virtually and simplifying coaching (in-person before March and virtually after). It truly is rewarding to see how lives are changed through coaching accountability. See how to work with me here.
  • Through client transformations, I achieved Master-Level Certified KonMari Consultant status and cannot wait to continue helping people simplify their lives as a way to stop the growth of healthcare burnout. See 3-ways to work with me here.
  • Investing in myself with a Hydrow Rower and achieving my goals of 100,000 meters, 250,000 meters and 500,000 meters before the year-end. It was truly one of the best investment to support my mind and body at home this year. Read here the blog post on why I love this rower.
  • My fiancé and I got engaged after 7 years together. Find out why we are not having a wedding in upcoming podcast/YouTube episodes! My fiancé also finished 14-years of training and joined his private practice. We make it work as a dual-couple in healthcare with intention and joy in our lives. We opted to forgo our 3-week vacation to celebrate his graduation (a trip to Europe or Tokyo) and will hold off on travel indefinitely. His highlight was receiving his first vaccine dose before the New Year (he performs procedures daily on hospitalized patients).
  • We moved to a new home. I sold the first home I purchase 4 years ago and my parents moved too. We all live in the Los Angeles area still but are IN LOVE with our new homes (still 1100 square feet and we didn’t add any furniture during the move).
  • We invested in our first all-electric car this year. This was an VERY intentional purchase AFTER 3 years saving for this purchase. YES, I still own my 2000 Camry and we replaced my fiancé’s Civic (we knew we were giving it back to his family after his training finished) and we researched and saved for this car purchase for 3+ years. We opted for all-electric because we no longer want to support petrochemical/oil companies and we are doing our part for eco-friendly, non-toxic living. We went with a minimalistic design to support our simple lifestyle. We also opted to only replace one of our two cars and are mostly living off this new car because I work from home for now.
  • Growing our eco-friendly, non-toxic community with workshops here and information here.
