Welcome back to The Burnout Doctor Podcast with your host, Dr. Jessica Louie. Today on episode 5 we are talking about first steps back to you while recovering from healthcare burnout.

Today I’m discussing the First Steps back to You while recovering from burnout:

1. Acknowledging you may be suffering from healthcare burnout

Stop telling yourself that you’re in survival mode. This is just how it’s got to be. When we say other pharmacists and professionals do it, I can do it too, this can lead to ignoring the problem. When we say that this is just how adult life is with the pull of spouses, children and work, we are ignoring the problem.

Hitting rock bottom is a good thing – you know it’s time for a change and you’re ready to make it. I hit rock bottom before making changes in my life.

2. Bash the stigma – we are acutely aware of the negative connotation about mental health and confidentiality, we may have fear after trained to be strong/survivor. Yes, it can be painful and fearful to be real and authentic with yourself and with others – family, friends, colleagues.

Many people feel comfortable and change is uncomfortable.

3. Even if our own oath doesn’t include this yet, we can include it in our own lives

The pharmacist oath may not include a statement on chronic stress or burnout, but that doesn’t mean it is not important. Why don’t we pledge similar to World Medical Association’s Declaration of Geneva which was amended in 2017 to include the following statement:

“I will attend to my own health, well-being and abilities in order to provide care of the highest standard.”

4. CURATE Method podcast episode 7 on how to take action right away and set goals.

Additional one: Set aside 1 hour a week. 1 hour a week can be the first baby step to help you: Unpack your situation, Brain dump out information onto paper and Get it all out.

It’s important to understand your baseline, how you’re feeling now before you set up your ideal lifestyle and intention into the changes you’ll be backing.
