Episode 54: Why Pharmacist and Healthcare Burnout is not cured + Burnout Prevention Strategies
Why does this approach not work?
First, we don’t cure burnout.
We don’t get up one day and say, wow I don’t have burnout anymore. And I’ll never have it again.

Mentioned on Ep 054: Pharmacist and healthcare burnout is not cured. It takes burnout prevention strategies to reset burnout.
One of the myths I hear all the time from healthcare organizations is: we need to solve our burnout problem.
What I hear when this is said: We need to slap a band-aid on burnout.
Why does this approach not work?
First, we don’t cure burnout.
We don’t get up one day and say, wow I don’t have burnout anymore. And I’ll never have it again.
It’s been nearly 5 years since I experienced burnout myself. Remember, I didn’t even know to classify it as burnout at the time. Go back and listen to episode 1, episode 2, and episode 4 for a refresher on my own story and myths of burnout. Now, 5 years later, do I ever experience burnout symptoms. Yes, I do. They are not the full spectrum of burnout though. I am able to catch myself in the stress phase before it becomes chronic and turns into burnout.
That is why I view burnout as NOT a problem to be SOLVED.
- Burnout is not a “problem” to be “solved”
- Burnout and well-being are processes and they are not conquered, they are reset
- Fitness example to illustrate this myth and concept
- We exercise to stay fit.
- There are a number of exercises or types of them.
- These are called strategies.
- Fitness and exercise are a never ending process.
- The need for exercise and body movement does not go away.
- We exercise = we stay fit.
- We stop exercising = We stay unhealthy.
- We build up our “muscles” by practicing burnout prevention strategies just as we build up our “muscles” with fitness
