Mentioned on Ep 009: Reset your Mindset // What If Protocol on The Burnout Doctor Podcast

Welcome back to The Burnout Doctor Podcast with your host, Dr. Jessica Louie. Today on episode 9, we are discussing how to reset your mindset. This helps with a fear of failure.

When we are working on personal and professional growth, often times, we are our own worst enemy. We hold ourselves back. Second guess ourselves. And self-sabotage. Let’s be intentional in our growth and allow ourselves to thrive in any environment we face.

Here is one activity to address mindsets head-on and reframe them if needed.

We will also get into Impostor Syndrome, Inner Mean Girl/Boy and more related topics later in this podcast! Now enjoy this simple yet transformative technique my friends!

I first learned about the What If protocol from my business coach. Yes, you heard that correctly. Not in school or pharmacy school or residency. My business coach, Natalie Eckdahl of BizChix, even wrote a book on reseting your mindset.

What-If Protocol

Think about an area where you are stuck. You have fear about it. Your brain is trying to protect you. Ask yourself questions to think about all the possibilities that could happen. Then at the end, we’ll see if we can survive these possibilities.

The What-If protocol is very similar to asking yourself WHY you are doing something or want to do something – this is one of the first steps in my philosophy – aka why I call my process the Clarify, Simplify, Align process – and why setting your ideal lifestyle and WHY you want to declutter is a first step in the KonMari Method

Let’s walk through the What-If Protocol

What is it you are afraid of? – letting go of rain jacket, sentimental dining table

Ok, what if that happened? – I wouldn’t have it when it rained, for family holiday dinner

What would you do? – I would wear a different jacket, I would use a different table

Ok, now what are you worried could happen next? – I couldn’t substitute one I have to wear, a family member would comment that I didn’t keep a family heirloom

If that happened, what would you do? – I could purchase a new jacket or I could borrow one from my sister or a friend, I would share the story behind the dining table, a photo of it

Ok, now what else could happen that concerns you? Family would not be satisfied with my answer and make me feel guilty about it

If that happened, how would you handle it? Guilt is my own feeling and I get to choose my feelings so I would share that family heirlooms are not about the physical item, it’s about the memory and story we share with each other

You keep going until you get to the end of all your fears and worries.

When you get to the end, ask, could I survive that?

If yes, you are ready to do it! Take Action my friends!

Simple, right?

Remember, I’m all about being proactive and not reactive or passive – so please don’t passively listen to these episodes – maybe you listen the first time while driving, then go back and fill in the workbook when you arrive at your destination (such as during breakfast at the office) or while journaling in the evening before bedtime.

This is the same technique I use while reading books. I’ve converted back to physical book reading (not audiobooks usually) and fold down pages I want to go back to. After I finish the entire book, I go back and type up notes I want to remember and take action on from the pages I marked earlier. Then, if I need to schedule time into my calendar about the things I need to take action on from the book, I do it and stick to that calendar appointment

It will change your life!

If you’re struggling right now, my coaching program offers 30-minute weekly sessions to check-in for accountability, reflect on progress, answer and guide you through difficulties. Apply now at DrJessicaLouie.com/coaching.
