Start the Day Well Rested

Sleep and hydration are two of my go-to recommendations when working with clients and students. They are so simple and often overlooked if we are not feeling well or burned out. Make your sleeping environment a sanctuary. Keep electronics out of this area or at least turned off 30-60 minutes before bedtime. I like to change my pillowcase before bed.

Stop Thinking the Day will be Bad before it has even Started

Have you ever woken up on Monday morning and said “Ugh, it’s Monday.”? Speaking to ourselves in a negative voice affects our mindset and mood as we go about the day. There are simple ways to change this negative self-talk. I like to say one phrase each morning to start my day on the right foot – “Today is going to be A GREAT day!”

Do Errands during the Week instead of on Weekends

I much prefer doing daily maintenance errands such as laundry and grocery shopping during the week instead of on a weekend. This helps us decompress on weekends. In addition, think about doing less overall in errands and maintenance. You can own less (so you have less to clean, maintain and repair). You can lower your standards (how often do you really need to clean the windows and baseboards). You can hire help. I’ve done the first two, especially decluttering to own less and lowering my standards for what is considered “clean.”

Go out Midweek

We don’t need to wait until the weekend to go out for a date night or girls night out. Make plans for Wednesday or Thursday and enjoy happy hour together.

Enjoy your Luxury Items NOW!

How many of us have gifts we have never opened because we are waiting to use them for a special occasion? Whether it’s that bottle of wine/alcohol or your favorite holiday china, use it now! We can cherish these items any time of the year and any day of the week.

Take Breaks

If we never take breaks during the week, it’s no wonder we are so exhausted we are living for weekends. I recommend a 5-10 minute break each hour. If you work from home or work at a desk job, you can get up, stretch, walk around, refill your water bottle, use the restroom, look outside or go outside. The options are endless. If you don’t have this flexibility, take your breaks at work and try to avoid using your phone or social media during these breaks to really rejuvenate your mind and body.

Practice Gratitude

At the end of the day, write down one thing you are grateful for. It can be simple. You can also say this out loud or ask your family members to share this at the dinner table with one another. It helps us feel valued and connected at the end of the day and no matter what kind of day we had, practicing gratitude at the end of it can lift our spirits.
