Mentioned on Ep 097: How to practice authentic gratitude
Welcome back to The Burnout Doctor Podcast, I’m your host Dr. Jessica Louie. This is episode 97 of the podcast – With Thanksgiving TODAY I thought it would be great to bring in gratitude and thanks into this topic. I’ll be sharing HOW to be grateful and thankful all year long.
What is gratitude?
It turns what we have into enough
a thankful appreciation for what an individual receives, whether tangible or intangible. With gratitude, people acknowledge the goodness in their lives … As a result, gratitude also helps people connect to something larger than themselves as individuals – whether to other people, nature, or a higher power
There is a difference between forced gratitude and being authentically grateful.
Recently, I’ve heard from people that it’s been difficult to feel grateful. They tell me “at least…I have a job or at least I’m I can pay the electric bill.” Forced gratitude starts with “at least” and it implies that something is wrong or something is missing.
Authentic gratitude is what I practice daily. It’s writing down what we’re grateful for. It’s shifting our mindset and realizing there are a LOT of amazing, wonderful, positive things going on in my life and surrounding me. This could be simple.
- I’m grateful for the smell of coffee in the morning
- I’m grateful for the warm water in the shower
- I’m grateful for the hug with my partner
- I’m grateful for the feeling of my baby’s skin on mine
It’s simple. It’s not “at least I have running water” type of statement.
For those who want to start cultivating joy and gratitude in their day, this is your action step.
Take 5 minutes each evening and write down:
3 things I appreciated today were…
3 things I am thankful for are…
3 things I’m grateful for are…
These are the same questions I incorporate into my custom Clarify Simplify Align planner and journal (shown here) – I prime myself in the morning with journal prompts to bring JOY into my day so that at nighttime, I know I’ll bring GRATITUDE into each night with the intention I put into each day.
You can do the same in your own planner or bullet notebook
What am I grateful and thankful for this season? And on Thanksgiving?
