Create realistic goals and expectations

Creating realistic expectations is an excellent way to start moving away from perfectionism. We often create this disillusioned, unrealistic expectations and goals in life. you can go back to episode 95 on Letting Go of Unrealistic Expectations. This is why I like to visualize a goal and then reverse engineer it back into present day with small steps and goals along the way. We can reverse engineer a yearly expectation down into a quarterly, then a monthly, then a weekly and then a daily goal.

Challenge your inner critic and negative self-talk

We all have an inner mean girl or inner boy in ourselves. We can challenge our negative self-talk to let go of being perfect all the day. No one is perfect.

Allow yourself to make mistakes and see how to learn from them

Going back to the mindset and Carol Dweck’s Mindset book, allow yourself to make mistakes. Learn to see mistakes as learning opportunities.

Focus on the positives and the small wins

When we are chasing perfectionism we often forget about the small wins we have each and every day. Focusing on the positives and having gratitude for one thing each day can help us reset this.

Focus on meaning over perfect

Why do we strive for perfectionism in the first place? What is the purpose of it? Taking a step back to analyze this can be helpful. We can focus on the meaning something has in our life over how it needs to be perfect in our life.

We are the CEOs of our lives. We run our lives. Life doesn’t run us.
