Welcome back to The Burnout Doctor Podcast, episode 59, where we are talking about why it’s ok to change your mind. Yes, we all do it. Now, let’s not beat ourselves up over it. Thank you for the feedback on last week’s episode on why choosing what to discard is not the same as choosing joy. Making this simple mindset shift really helped many of you and I cannot wait to hear about your own decluttering and simplifying journeys as a healthcare family. Remember, we all write our own stories in our lives and homes. Let’s all bring joy into home and joy into work.

On today’s episode, we are talking about why it’s ok to change your mind. I hear this fear in my community and clients all the time. I can’t do that. I can’t do that because I already made a decision on that. I can’t do that because I said I would never…

We have fear around decisions and making the wrong decision. Remember, there is no wrong decision. It is ok to change your mind about a decision.

For those who are familiar with the Kolbe A assessment, I’m a quick start. That means I have lots of ideas and want to go full force into all of them. I like thinking outside the box to solve problems. This is great as a coach and unbiased person helping another person. But…it can also leave me going in different directions constantly. So, when I want to pivot from an idea or project I set out a couple months ago, I tell myself, it’s ok to change my mind. It is ok to pivot from a decision because it’s not the right fit or not best aligned with my life.

What held me back from changing my mind? Forgiving myself and letting go of judging myself or worrying about others judging me for changing my mind.

Can you relate to this?

For my clients who are simplifying their lives, they often fear making the wrong decision about if am item sparks joy. I tell them – if it’s a yes, keep it. If it’s a maybe right now, keep it. If it’s a no, let it go with gratitude. You are allowed to keep items in the maybe or gray zone, especially in the beginning. As you hone your skills of bringing joy into your life, you may change your mind about an item and realize it does not spark joy. It’s ok to change your mind about an item. Let it go with gratitude.

Remember, joy is not static. What brings us joy or adds joy to our lives is changing. Our lives change as the seasons change.

For my parents out there, I hear this fear all the time. My clients have told me, I’m afraid to change my discipline method or I’m afraid to change how I feed my children. Change can be uncomfortable while it can also be the best move for you and your family. Yes, it is ok to pivot and change your mind about your parenting, about your values, about your routines. Give yourself grace. See how you feel when you make a pivot and adjust accordingly.

If you’re really struggling with a decision, ask yourself if you’re mentally overloaded? Do you carry too much mental clutter with you throughout the day. Take one step to let go and simplify that mental clutter. That might mean shutting off your phone, scheduling a reminder in your calendar, teaching others how to communicate with you, or brain dumping out thoughts in your head onto paper.

There is no blueprint for living life. We all create our own stories. Write yours today.
