Welcome back to The Burnout Doctor Podcast with your host, Dr. Jessica Louie. Today we are continuing our Pharmacist Month special edition with guest, Dr. Shawn Bjorndal.

In today’s episode, Dr. Shawn Bjorndal talks about his unique journey through pharmacy after growing up on a farm in the midwest, watching his mom work in a pharmacy and then venturing out to Arizona, Hawaii and now California as a pharmacist.

He started off his pharmacy career with a leadership role (Pharmacist in Charge, also known as PIC) within one year of graduation and soon realized he was not properly trained to handle a 24-hour busy pharmacy store or the team members he managed. Shawn made unhealthy choices to cope, both physically and financially. Fast forward half a decade and he has now learned how to align his skills in an environment that creates better work life alignment and no longer feels burned out from his work. His piece of advice for all of you: think outside the box for the opportunities to work as a pharmacist and serve our communities.

About: Dr. Shawn Bjorndal, PharmD, CEO and Founder of RPhAlly, is a graduate of the School of Pharmacy at North Dakota State University. Shawn began his pharmacy career in the retail setting and spent over a decade serving patients at the community level. In 2016, he transitioned to a leadership role in mail order and became licensed in 27 states. His responsibilities include the oversight of the practice of pharmacy, corresponding responsibility, regulatory and compliance, control substance supply chain, and the security of the pharmacy. He is currently part of the San Diego Prescription Drug Abuse Task Force to help decrease the abuse of prescription drugs. His greatest professional passion is to help solve the opioid epidemic through thought leadership and interdisciplinary team collaboration.

Founded in 2019, RPhAlly is a networking platform for pharmacists and pharmacy students. Shawn’s vision of RPhAlly is to become a one-stop-shop to help pharmacists find the right connections and career roadmaps, increase industry awareness, learn from colleagues, and advocate for the profession. Born in Granite Falls, Minnesota, Shawn currently resides in Carlsbad, California, with his wife and two boys.
